Frequently Asked Questions

Are they completely hand made?

Yes, from start to finish.

First, blocks of selected hardwoods are glued into a rustic form, just as old-time Carousel masters did. Each selected wood compliments the others, granting the rocking horse strength and longevity.

Next, the rocking horse is roughly carved into one of several historic designs. Imagination takes over from there.

The breed of horse, blanket, and trappings emerge during carving. Adzes, chisels and files bring the horse to a refined shape, sculpted and sanded into a supple equine form. The horses receive and carry forward hand-painted designs and styles, natural manes and tails, leather tack and forged stirrups.

Can I commission a rocking horse?

Yes, commissioned work is welcome. We love to take your creative ideas, merge them with Cambridge Rocking Horse craftsmanship and bring yet another unique design to life.

Only 4 to 5 horses can be made per year. We’ll provide a delivery schedule in advance of work, but if you have a birthday or Christmas in mind, the sooner we know your needs the better. Commissioned rocking horses are crafted in the order placed.

Will my rocking horse ever crack?

All woods are aged and dried, but wood is a living material. Over time, wood will marble and develop a rich patina. We have yet to experience any carving or construction issues with our rocking horses. While we’ll never say never, caring for your rocking horse as you would any fine wooden piece should ensure generations of pleasure.

What are the dimensions?

The final dimensions of our rocking horses are 30 inches tall, 47 inches long, and 12 inches wide.

Other reproduction figures are mounted on a marble base, with a traditional brass plate.

How much weight will they support?

Cambridge Rocking Horses are intended for children’s entertainment and constructed with play in mind. Children under 100 pounds can safely use your rocking horse without undue wear.

Other reproduction figures are ornamental.

How do I get my rocking horse home?

We take shipping seriously, and have designed our own shipping containers. Each rocking horse is wrapped in polypropylene to safeguard detail work, fitted with a layer of insulation, and shipped in a customized box. If you’re nearby we can certainly deliver it, or perhaps you’d enjoy a drive in the country to pick it up. Your choice.

How can I contact you?
